A musical journey of discovery. Three concerts exploring the interplay of the familiar and the exotic in musical evolution.
"Trailblazers"
November 21, 2009 - Mendelssohn’s Muse
Travel in a musical time machine! The adventure begins with the pure serenity of Renaissance motets, then winds its way through the highly ornamented Baroque, and elegant classical simplicity before reaching Mendelssohn’s expansive yet tender romanticism. The final stop is Mendelssohn’s Jesu, meine Freude, newly revealed as the musical culmination of the earlier masters who inspired him. In addition, we will be performing Bach's Cantata BWV 4 (Christ lag in Todesbanden), Palestrina's Sicut Cervus, and Mendelssohn's sensitive and beautiful Drei Volkslieder for unaccompanied choir. The orchestra will also be performing Mozart's thirteenth Serenade, his beloved Eine kleine Nachtmusik K. 525.
In his pre-concert talk, Mark Bailey shares his research on Mendelssohn’s letters, which express the composer’s musical loves and influences.
All concerts begin at 8:00 pm at
